How to actually sleep cool: sizing and using a cooling blanket
Cooling bedding gets sold as if the fabric does all the work. It does a lot, but a cooling blanket is one part of a system, and the people who are disappointed by one are almost always fighting it with the rest of their setup — or bought the wrong size. Here is how to pick between the two, what the fabric does, and how to arrange everything else so it actually delivers.
Start with the size, not the fabric
Cooling blankets are sold in throw sizes far more often than bed sizes, and "smaller than expected" is the single most common complaint in reviews of every brand. UK mattresses are standard, so measure yours and work from that:
- Single: 90 x 190cm
- Small double: 120 x 190cm
- Double: 135 x 190cm
- King: 150 x 200cm
- Super king: 180 x 200cm
The 200 x 150cm covers a double with about 7cm spare each side and plenty of length. On a king it covers the mattress but has essentially nothing to tuck, so it becomes a top layer. On a super king it will not reach. The 170 x 130cm is not a bed covering at all — it is a personal layer, and buying it expecting otherwise is the mistake to avoid.
When the smaller one is the better buy
The single is not simply the cheap option. It is the right answer whenever the goal is one person's temperature rather than the bed's. If your partner runs cold and you run hot, a shared cooling layer just moves the argument — they end up cold instead of you ending up hot. Two separate top layers is the setup that actually works, and a single cooling blanket plus their existing duvet is the cheapest version of it.
It is also the one to buy if the blanket is going to travel. At 0.7kg and packed in its pouch it is genuinely portable, which matters for hotels with no air conditioning, caravans, long flights and spare rooms.
What "cool to the touch" actually measures
The number to look for is Q-Max, measured in watts per square centimetre. It describes how much heat a fabric draws from your skin in the first instant of contact. Above roughly 0.2 and a fabric is sold as cool-touch; the fibre in this blanket is rated 0.43 by its maker, which is at the strong end of what is available in a normal blanket.
Two honest caveats. First, Q-Max measures the initial hit, not the whole night — what carries the night is that the fabric keeps conducting heat away instead of storing it. Second, that first cold sensation returns whenever you move to an untouched patch of fabric, which is why cooling blankets feel best to people who shift about in their sleep.
Give the heat somewhere to go
This is the step most people skip. A cooling fabric moves heat off your skin and into the air around it. If that air is still and already warm, the blanket saturates and the effect flattens out. Moving air fixes it. A fan on low, aimed across the bed rather than at your face, roughly doubles what any cooling fabric can do. Open two windows on opposite sides of the flat for cross-flow rather than one window on its own, and do it late — after about 10pm the outside air is finally cooler than your bedroom, whereas opening up at 4pm just lets the afternoon in.
Fix the layer underneath, not just the one on top
A cooling blanket sits on top of you. The mattress underneath is often the real heat store, especially memory foam, which holds warmth against your back all night while your top half feels fine. If you are hot from below, a breathable mattress protector or a thin cotton topper will do more than another blanket. Same for pillows: a solid foam pillow bakes, while a fibre-fill or shredded-foam one lets air through.
Nightwear matters more than people expect too. Light cotton or a similar breathable fabric beats sleeping with nothing on, because bare skin against fabric traps sweat where it cannot evaporate, and evaporation is most of how you cool down.
Set the room up before you get in
Cool the room, not the person, and start early. Close curtains and blinds on the sunny side during the day so the room never heats up in the first place — it is far easier than cooling it down afterwards. Turn off anything with a power supply in the bedroom; a games console, a laptop charger and a TV on standby together put out real warmth in a small room. A cool shower an hour before bed helps, but a cold one does not: cold makes your body clamp down on blood flow to the skin and hold heat in. Lukewarm is right.
What a cooling blanket will not do
It is not air conditioning. In a 30-degree bedroom with no airflow, a cooling blanket makes the night better but not good. It will not make a hot mattress cool from the top down. And it is a comfort product — if you are waking drenched most nights, or that is new for you, that is a conversation for your GP rather than a shopping problem.
The short version
Measure the mattress first. Double bed and two hot sleepers, take the 200 x 150cm. One hot sleeper in a shared bed, take the 170 x 130cm and let them keep the duvet. Cooling side up in summer, brushed side up when it turns. A fan on low, aimed across the bed. Windows open late, curtains shut early, chargers off. Breathable nightwear and a breathable mattress protector. Do those and the blanket has a real chance of getting you through to morning.
